Best Card Machines And Mobile Card Machines

When it comes to finding the best card machines, it's not always easy and that's why we've put together this helpful download and keep guide.

So if you're reading this, then you know that card machines are the quickest, most trusted and easiest way to take payments from customers. However, whilst this is true, choosing a reliable provider, avoiding pricey charges and avoiding lengthy contracts can be far from easy.

What should I look out for with a card machine?

The first thing is rates, now here's the thing, some rates are fixed and some are not. For example, some card machines come with a monthly charge (a bit like a rental charge) that the owner has to pay irrespective of the number of transactions that go though. In addition to this, there are also transaction fees - which, if you scour the web hard enough, can be expensive or good value - it depends where you look.

The next thing is setup, is it easy / complicated or just too much? Of course, most providers are super helpful with helping you get your card machine setup but it's worth asking before you commit.

Don't forget connectivity - as we've mentioned in a previous blog if you have a mobile card machine then connectivity is well worth looking into. Don't just buy a card machine simply because it's a certain brand name!

Also key, is customer support - because there's nothing worse than having a problem with taking payments only to find that the support is poor! Of course, some providers provide great support which small businesses need and, of course, rely on. After all, a small business owner can't tell the customer "come back later". We've heard mixed reviews of customer support, but we'd love to share your experiences of customer support. After all, we're all here to help each other.

What about contract length? This is an interesting one, as some providers often put in incentives. Why? Well they want a longer contract so they're biased to get you in on a longer term contract (usually no longer than three years). What's in it for you? Easy - lower rates! In fact, it's often common practise for a provider to substantially lower rates on a longer contract. Whether you take the contract is entirely up to you, but don't be afraid to do some calls and find out if they can do you a special deal! After all, if you don't ask, well you don't get.

Also, what kind of card reader will you get? As we've mentioned elsewhere there are different card machines that connect differently. Which means that if you have a regular till, then a card machine that connects to the telephone line should be sufficient. But, if speed is of the essence then you'd need a card terminal to connect to the wired network. This being said, there are other options such as a mobile card machine that you can take with you, wherever you go. So if you're on the go - then you can accept payment from your customer, wherever they are!
